Both pyrolysis and torrefaction refer to heating biomass in an inert or oxygen deficient environment. What is the main difference between the two?

Torrefaction is carried out at a lower temperature (200-300 deg C) than pyrolysis (400-800 deg C). Thus, while pyrolysis could result in mixture of solid, liquid and gaseous end products, the main end product of torrefaction is biomass that is somewhat similar to coal (and hence is sometimes referred to as biocoal)
