Old household appliances in particular, such as refrigerators, washing machines or dishwashers, consume significantly more energy than newer appliances.

How much more energy? Or how much less energy could new, energy efficient appliances consume?

A report by the US govt energy agency on Energy Star washing machines mention that "ENERGY STAR certified front load washers use about 45% less energy and 50% less water than a top load agitator washer." That should give you how newer, more efficient tech for white goods could make a difference to lowering household energy consumption and consequently to lower CO2 emissions. 

The city of Stuttgart is now paying a subsidy of up to 150 euros for new, efficient appliances as part of its “Appliance Replacement Campaign.” Read more on this plan from here
