Steel is not just a large contributor in India alone, it is a massive contributor on the global scene as well, bellowing about 2.6 billion tons of the total 35 billion tons of global annual CO2 emissions
Interestingly, CO2 emissions from steel production happens in two ways. One is the more familiar avenue where CO2 is emitted as a result of energy (heat and power) needed during steel production. The other is during the reduction of iron ore (iron oxide) to iron, where coke is used as a reducing agent. In this process, the coke takes away oxygen from the iron ore and in turn is converted into CO2, which is let out in what are called "process CO2 emissions"
